NYC IFTAR DINNER
In New York City, in the U-S, the borough of Manhattan organized an iftar dinner for its Muslim residents Tuesday night. The annual event was attended by more than 200 people. And the underlying message was tackling malnutrition in Africa.
Manhattan's Muslim community came together for the Iftar dinner at The Malcolm X and Doctor Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center in New York.
The program kicked off with the ezan or call to prayer.
Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer congratulated the local muslim community on observance of the holy month of Ramadan and thanked sponsors of the program.
Stringer said it was time for members of the community to support one another.
The borough president also recognized a handful of organizations for their efforts to bring the community together and honored them with a proclamation.
One of the organizations was the Turkish Cultural Center or T-C-C. Its president, Zafer Akin thanked Stringer and said the recognition was proof that the T-C-C's message had made an impact.
During the program, one speaker talked about the famine in Africa and appealed to attendees to help.
During the dinner, muslims and non-muslims sat together at the same table and shared their meal. Some participants said they were happy to attend the dinner and learn about muslim traditions.
